For some reason, Khmer people are often reluctant to recognize fellow Khmers for their exceptional talents or contributions to the community. If Ms. Noun receives recognition from a well-known Western organization like CNN, then Khmer people will have no choice but to give her the props she deserves.
Personally, I think it sucks to have to first seek approval from others to gain approval from your own people. It’s not right. Khmer people alone have the power– and obligation– to honor and support our own people when they deserve it, with or without outsiders’ stamp of approval.
At any rate, I hope that Ms. Noun’s generosity and dedication will inspire other Khmers to follow in her footsteps. What’s more, if she wins she will receive $100,000 and be revealed during CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute Thanksgiving night (9PM ET).
