Once in a while we’d read about a Western pedophile getting nabbed by a local or international law enforcement agency for sexually abusing children in Cambodia. While I believe that the majority of Westerners are in Cambodia do good rather than harm, it’s also no secret that many are there to take advantage of the bustling sex trade and poor law enforcement of sex-related crimes.
Publicized cases such as this represent only the tip of the iceberg, as the vast majority of child sex offenses go unreported, unprospecuted and even unnoticed in an impoverished country still reeling from decades of war and genocide.
In Cambodia pedophilia is often practiced out in the open. You’d have to be in the country for only a few hours to spot middle-aged foreigners checking into hotel rooms with minors, walking hand-in-hand with apparently underaged girls on busy streets and marketplaces, luring street children with toys and candy, and engaging in other tell-tale acts of predatory behavior.
Naturally, many of them will want to stick around in the Cambodia to continue their sexual exploits. They’d support their deviant lifestyles by taking teaching jobs, opening businesses such as bars and nightclubs that cater to likeminded perverts, and even joining international aid groups in Cambodia.
In Cambodia, Westerners are generally associated with power, prestige and competence by the locals. They are smiled at, bowed to, and given first-class treatment at restaurants, hotels and other business establishments. They are highly coveted by private institutions to teach English to children from affluent families, sometimes without attention to proper academic credentials or background screening.
So, it’s not surprising that many Western pedophiles manage to stick around in Cambodia to create a sick and twisted paradise out of our nation, where they enjoy virtual impunity from the law, have easy access to children both from inside and outside the classroom, and earn salaries up to 50 times those of local Cambodian teachers to boot.
