I’m so glad to have found the following video that I wish to share with everyone.

It’s a riveting documentary on Cambodia’s troubled recent past, including the genocide we suffered during America’s carpet bombing of Cambodia between 1969-73, and the genocide we suffered afterwards under the brutal regime of Pol Pot. As a survivor of both genocides, I hope it will inspire all Cambodians to unite and work together in the spirit of tolerance, reconciliation, and national pride.

My family came to the U.S. when I was only 10 years old, as refugees fleeing from war-torn Cambodia. Speaking very little English I was able to excel in school right away, topping my class in both math and science within the first week I attended. Within a year I was able to top my class in all subjects, including language arts and American history.

What’s more, I was able to do this while being constantly racially tormented by the white, black and Hispanic kids. Now, I don’t like to brag about my past successes, and it’s not like I have that many to brag about in the first place. I just want to bring them up here to show that we Cambodians can achieve anything that we put our hearts and minds to, and we should never feel inferior to anyone in any way.

If one Khmer is able to achieve as much as I have (and it’s not even that much) in the name of Khmer pride, just imagine what 15 million of us, working together, could achieve in the name of Khmer pride! After all, didn’t we build Angkor Wat? It’s within the blood of the Khmer people to be great. Despite our recent sad history, it’s time for our people to rise from the ashes and be great once more, and the only way to do this is to place our faith and trust in our own ability and our own people, not to trust our fate to outsiders– East or West.
